Women and girls throughout the world face obstacles, discrimination, poverty, and violence simply because they are female. In many societies, being born female limits opportunities and presents insurmountable challenges. For many women and girls, sex discrimination is compounded by other forms of discrimination related to race, ethnicity, income level, age, migrant status, and other conditions. “And when that gender divide becomes extreme it is likened to gender apartheid, in the words of one of my colleagues: In many societies, women are considered of such low value as compared to men that their life course of heightened risks, vulnerability and inequality is already laid out for them by the time girls reach puberty.” “Without progress in the situation of women, there can be no true social development. Human rights are not worthy of the name if they exclude the female half of humanity. The struggle for women’s equality is part of the struggle for a better world for all human beings, and all societies.” Our Pilot Project At the beginning of 2008, we will place our first volunteers in projects of partner organizations in Brazil. PWE will provide volunteers with a project in one of our partner organizations, cultural orientation, a host family placement, language training, and continuing local support during their volunteer experience. About Our Logo Our logo represents a woman: strong, vibrant, and active. We call it “Woman Rising.” The logo is a work of art created by Ellen Schillace, a talented Minnesota artist. To see other work by Schillace, visit her website. This poem, by Marianne Curry, one of our founding members describes the logo: VOICE Little girls are taught to dream Big girls are taught to seek Many girls are not Big and little girls across the globe, Suffer humiliation, sexual they are forgotten...ignored. Be careful, children. of religious frocks, who flourish run amok, Rise up, good people. © 2007 All Rights Reserved More Information about Partners for Women's Equality Get Involved!
