Bamidelê, Organization of Afro-Brazilian Women of Paraíba Who are they? Bamidelê is a nongovernmental organization founded by Afro-Brazilian women in 2001 to work for social change. Bamidelê means "working for hope" in the African language of Yoruba. The office is located in João Pessoa, a city of 600,000 in the state of Paraíba. What they do? The staff of six works for the elimination of racism and sexism, along with promoting public debate and activities that strengthen identity, self-esteem, and human rights of Afro-Brazilian women. They serve urban and rural Afro-Brazilian women, children, and adolescents in the state of Paraíba. Bamidelê provides courses, presentations, workshops, leadership formation activities, and educational publications. They have initiated a coalition of all Afro-Brazilian women’s groups in the state of Paraiba, providing technical assistance to these groups. Bamidelê also supports adolescent groups, women’s groups and rural groups. What can we do for them? PWE will provide training in organizational management, planning, classes in other languages, report writing and project development and increase their professional staffing with volunteers who have the following skills:

• • • • • • • • Afya, Holistic Center for Women Who are they? Afya is a nongovernmental organization that was formed in 1998. Afya means health in Swahili. It is located on the outskirts of João Pessoa in an economically disadvantaged community in the state of Paraíba in Northeastern Brazil. Read more about them in the January 2008 Newsletter. What do they do? The four staff and four volunteers teach womenabout natural methods of healing and maintaining health through medicinal plants, massage, reike, mud baths, and other forms of natural healing. Afya creates a space where Workshops, trainings, and courses provide a wide variety of information such as the use of medicinal plants, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, the environment, healthy eating, sexuality, citizenship, and human rights. They have small-group and individual counseling to aid in dealing with a wide variety of issues, to provide support and healing, and to build self-esteem. Women are treated through natural healing methods and therapy, and they provide training in oriental massage, energy, reflexology, massage, mental health, and reiki. An organic garden is maintained and shared with the community. What can we do for them? PWE will provide training in nonprofit management, leadership development, organic gardening, art using recycled products and other professional staffing. We need volunteers with these skills:

• • • • • • • • Who are they? Casa Aberta is a residential program for neglected and abused children removed from their families by the court. They provide a home for 40 – 50 children. Some stay for a few weeks or a few months and others for years. Children may be returned to their families or placed for adoption. Casa Aberta first organized in 1996 as a nonprofit organization to work on the problem of street children in São Leopoldo and the surrounding area. They started by providing services and developed into a residential program. They currently have a second structure under construction. Casa Aberta provides safe and supportive housing and services to 40 – 50 at risk children and adolescents in São Leopoldo, RS, Brazil. In addition to food and shelter, they provide social services, recreational activities, medical support and tutoring to assist the children in their education. What can we do for them?

• • • • • • • • Who they are? Centro de Medianeira, nonprofit organization, was created to work with children and adolescents from the very poor areas in São Leopoldo. Centro de Medianeira is committed to giving the children and adolescents education. All of the services at Centro de Medianeira are free. What they do? Centro de Medianeira provides before-school and after-school programmingsuch as assistance with homework, recreation, food, and activities. Theyserve students from 6 to 17 years of age who come from very poor and problematic families and live on less than US $200 per month. The They also have a vocational program in carpentry, tailoring, electricity, and computers. Graduates are ready to start work; however, a great number leave Centro de Medianeira before graduating due to drug addiction and violence. The organization is always in close contact with the students’ families, help them to better understand their children and providing some psychological and other support. What can we do for them?
