Leadership Programs

In 2008 PWE will develop a program for Indigenous women leaders working to end violence against Indigenous women.  We will unite a group of women who share common goals and mission but work in different countries (U.S., Mexico, and Guatemala).

Why is this important?

We focus on this issue because 1 in 3 Native women are the victim of sexual assault in the U.S., and 6 out of 10 Native women are victims of a violent physical attack. Perpetrators are typically not held accountable. Leaders finding solutions in their own communities must be masters at working across cultures, because major policy changes are needed to make major improvements.

The 2007 Amnesty International Report, Maze of Injustice, provides in-depth information on the human rights violations.

Objectives

Participants will…

  • Increase organizational leadership and management skills (including computer skills, planning skills, financial management skills, and resource development/grantwriting skills)
  • Learn how to build a base of community support and involvement related to women and women’s issues
  • Develop the capacity to influence systems and be intentional participants in local and global change processes
  • Learn how to transfer acquired skills, knowledge, and attitudes to others in their organizations and communities
  • Be a part of creating new approaches to leadership that fit women’s experiences worldwide
